Lex Rieffel

Lex Rieffel joined the Brookings Institution in 2002 and is now a nonresident senior fellow with the Global Economy and Development program. At Brookings, he has produced policy studies related to Southeast Asia, emerging markets finance, and reform of the IMF and World Bank. His three published books have focused on sovereign debt restructuring, military business in Indonesia, and the transition to democratic rule in Myanmar/Burma. For 18 years, he worked as an international economist with the US Treasury Department and then for 7 years was a Senior Advisor at the Institute for International Finance. Since joining Brookings, he has taught graduate seminars at Johns Hopkins University-SAIS, Syracuse University-Maxwell School, and George Washington University-Elliott School. He was engaged as an advisor for three months by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in November 2011, and taught 3-week economics courses in the International Center of Excellence program at the University of Yangon in mid-2013 and mid-2014.
